CHARACTER
NAME: Shoto Todoroki
CANON: My Hero Academia
CANON POINT: End of s3 of the anime
AGE: 16
BACKGROUND: wiki wiki

PERSONALITY: In many ways, Shoto's Quirk is reflective of his personality. He is a person of contrasts and extremes, both hot and cold, passionate and analytical. This isn't to say he has a split personality or anything, but conflict between his halves and the search for balance and resolution is an essential part of his character arc and growth as a person.

On the surface, Shoto is calm, cool, a stoic type who is intensely analytical. He rarely smiles, keeps himself focused on performing well at school and training his skills, and doesn't really make small talk with his classmates. Referred to as 'cool,' 'manly,' and 'intense' by his classmates, he's the stereotypical ice prince. His confidence in his abilities and strength when paired with his general brusque demeanor frequently make him come off as arrogant and rude. His analytical skills are also quite strong, meaning that Shoto is incredibly perceptive and often able to see through to the heart of an issue, and will often voice any concerns or revelations bluntly, with little concern or awareness for how this might affect the feelings of others. All of these things combined with the incredible strength of his quirk, his general appearance (being one of the tallest students in his class without a physical/body modification Quirk, with the kind of body that comes from a lot of intense work and a prominent burn scar over the left side of his face) and the fact that he's been subjected to intense training for the last decade of his life mean that it's very easy to forget that Shoto is only 15 when he starts at UA, and is in fact one of the youngest students in his class. He's still a kid, just like his peers in many ways, though honestly he just isn't sure how to actually make friends or talk to people outside of only the roughest context. Shoto spent his entire life from age 5 to 15 completely isolated from both his peers and his siblings, sequestered away with his father and subjected to a harsh training regimen. Canon doesn't really say one way or the other, but judging by his inability to actually communicate with his peers, I assume he was homeschooled during this period. He's incredibly intelligent and approaches his academic training with the same seriousness he approaches his Quirk training, and placed 5th in his class midterms, only falling behind class representative Iida, top student Yaoyorozu, Midoriya and Bakugou, and yet despite this intelligence he also frequently will jump to the wrong conclusion based on available data (like noticing the connection between Midoriya's ability and All Might's, but then assuming Midoriya was All Might's secret love child). He's also got a tendency to take things incredibly literally, and is so earnest and direct it can occasionally cause secondhand embarrassment.

Below that cool, competent exterior however, Shoto is all fire: he's passionate about his ideals, driven in pursuit of his goals, though those change over the course of his first year at UA and will continue to evolve. He's got an incredibly high competitive drive, and is constantly striving to be the best, both to show his father not to take him lightly but also because he holds himself to an incredibly high standard, feeling responsible in large part for the suffering of his mother during his childhood. He still feels bitterness and resentment towards his father for the physical and emotional abuse he subjected both Shoto and his mother to, and at first vows to become a hero without ever using what he calls his father's fire quirk just to spite him, but over the course of his developing friendship with Midoriya Shoto is learning to come to terms with that half of his lineage, claiming his fire for himself and finding motivation in other places besides just the drive to surpass his father. He never blamed his mother for the burn she inflicted upon him as a child, but stayed away for years out of a sense of guilt, for being the 'reason' for her psychotic break and his father's abuse, but has also recently begun to reconcile those feelings as well. He frequently pushes himself to his limits, and takes blame for things that aren't necessarily his fault, berating himself for choices he could have made better and replaying events after the fact, a trait he shares with Midoriya.

In honesty, Shoto's behavior actually becomes a little less mature as the school year progresses. Thanks to his friendship with Midoriya, and the relationships he's slowly building with his classmates such as Iida and Yaoyorozu, Shoto is learning to 'thaw out' to some degree, revealing a very wry, sardonic sense of humor and a flair for the melodramatic. Once he's decided he's someone's friend, he's dedicated 100%, and won't hesitate to step up to their defense, whether that means fighting alongside them, taking an internship with his father to learn how to be a better number two, or literally calling the chief of police a mutt because he's talking shit about his friends. He's learning how to be more human, and while there are still plenty of stumbling blocks he'll face along the way, overall, Shoto Todoroki is an incredibly passionate, dedicated individual who at his core wants to become a hero not just to be better than his father, but to help people and show them what being a hero truly means. While he has trouble letting go of his past, continuing to struggle with his abusive father and traumatic childhood and the marks both physical and emotional that these have left on him, he strives to look towards the future and pursue his goals with all his heart, learning to rely not just upon himself but on the friends he's making and the supportive adult role models he now has in his life.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Shoto's Quirk is called Half-Cold Half-Hot, and it's stated to be one of the most powerful Quirks of his generation. The right half of his body produces ice and cold-based attacks, while the left half of his body produces fire and heat-based attacks. While he has to be careful to not make his body temperature fluctuate too much, risking heatstroke or hypothermia, Shoto is more than capable of creating vast icebergs that fill half of a stadium or large, fiery tornadoes. While both sides are equally powerful, Shoto has definitely practiced more with his ice-based powers and thus has more control and dexterity with them as opposed to his fire powers, and often tends to lead with his right half in a fight--a tendency which he admits makes him somewhat predictable in a fight and which he's trying to correct.

Along with this quirk, Shoto also possesses enhanced durability, able to take even a 5% One For All punch from Midoriya directly to the stomach without internal injuries, enhanced endurance born from his history of intense training, and incredibly good reflexes and agility. He's strong, fast, and smart as hell, able to make connections quickly and develop tactics to use against an opponent mid-battle. He's also fairly book smart, placing 5th in the school midterms.

INVENTORY: Shoto is arriving in his hero costume, which has five first aid kits in small capsules hanging from his belt. Aside from these things, he just has his phone in his pocket--which clearly is way out of service range. Good thing, those roaming charges would be insane.
