How am I doing with Shoto? Do I need to do things more, do things less, do something totally different? Please feel free to leave your thoughts and words here! Comments screened.

[Two weeks has dragged by like it's two months, and yet it seems like no time at all, simultaneously. One minute they're making these plans, and now... Now he's here, standing outside the onsen gates with an overnight bag slung over his shoulder, waiting for Hawks to arrive, heart pounding in what he's pretty sure is a mixed bag of excitement, anticipation, and nerves. Yeah, they'd had that rooftop encounter, and it had been nice. Really nice. They'd clicked well, and despite the abrupt end, it hadn't been a bad way to spend an evening. He's hoping this evening has a less abrupt end. In fact, he's hoping that maybe he's not the only one who saw the word 'overnight' and immediately had some thoughts as to how they could spend that time, and that bag may contain an assortment of supplies due to that hope. He wouldn't dream of pushing, of course, if that's not the case, but still... They'll find out soon, though, won't they? As soon as Hawks arrives.]

[There are some days he's still not really sure this is all real. Of course it feels real, and logically he knows it is, he and Ochako have been dating for a few months now, and every single one has been amazing, but...it still doesn't feel like it. How did he end up like this? He doesn't know how he got so lucky. Midoriya doesn't know what he missed out on.

They're in Ochako's room tonight, on her bed watching one of those K-dramas he's found himself weirdly invested in, a place that's become both comforting and familiar in recent weeks. She's sitting in front of him, his arms wrapped around her waist and temple against her head, her arms on top of his, settled in against his chest, and she smells like flowers and strawberries and he just. Doesn't even know how his heart fits in his chest anymore.

Those arms tighten around her waist as the episode ends, squeezing her gently as he burrows his chin against her shoulder.]

Can't believe it ends on a cliffhanger like that...how are we supposed to wait three months to find out if Min-Jae and Min-Joon are actually brothers...

[There are days when he just knows he shouldn't have signed with his father's agency after graduation. Days when he knows it was sheer stubbornness, anger, and bitterness driving him to do it, no matter what he told himself. Maybe things had gotten a little better over the years between them, but six years of slow improvement wasn't going to erase the sixteen before them. And being there sometimes just made it worse.

It wasn't the sidekicks, though there was definitely some not-so-hidden resentment in some of them; overall, he'd earned his place in the ranks over the last four years, and the fact that he'd not only worked hard to hone his quirk, but also to develop considerable medical skills to be able to perform triage in the field had earned him the respect of most. And he'd learned to give them their credit, as well, to respect their abilities and to call on them when more than one hero would make things better. He wanted to be a hero to help people, not for the accolades. That includes his fellow heroes. That counts for something, among those who matter. And those who don't weren't worth worrying about.

Even his father had wanted to be a hero for the right reasons, once. Even his father still performed his duty, carrying the weight of number one to the best of his ability, in action if not in word. Maybe that's part of why he's still here. Enji had divorced Rei, had moved out and left the family home to his children, had been living a life of asceticism, throwing himself into his work and refusing to let anyone else into his life, aside from a very few very short-lived relationships that weren't ever actually called that. And as much as Shouto hates him...

It's complicated. And so he stays. Through the good days that remind him of why he's here, saving lives, learning how to control and use his flames almost surgically from Endeavor in unexpected ways, seeing him be gentle with a young girl crying, helping her find her mother. And through the bad days, too, the ones like today where Enji finds the fault in everything he says or does or doesn't say or is. The days where phrases like 'your potential' and 'how I raised you' and 'your future' and 'my power' pepper every conversation they have as well as every conversation Shouto tries to avoid. The days where he feels like that burning resentment within him is stealing all the oxygen out of his chest, and once again he feels like the angry teenager he's tried so hard to leave behind.

Thank god tonight is a bar night, sidekick bonding, the monthly use of whoever's birthday or new baby or hero anniversary to justify a night out on the agency's dime. He could use it, and although he typically doesn't drink much at these things beyond the one or two out of obligation, tonight he's so full of tension, so angry, that he decides screw it. He's twenty-two, he's single, he has no outstanding responsibilities and he's not on call for hero work or for the EMT agency where he volunteers his free time. He's got nothing going on, and for once? He's going to enjoy himself. This time, when Burnin' calls for shots, he's there with the rest of them. He's there with Cannon as they race through a pint together, and by the time they've been there for a couple of hours, he's got a nice buzz going, cheeks faintly flushed, collar unbuttoned and long sleeves cuffed to the elbow revealing intricate swirls of blue and red down to the wrist, tattoos he so rarely shows and almost never in public. This was a great idea, he thinks, and he's grinning as he lifts a glass of sake to clink against a fellow sidekick's, an attractive man around his own age with long dark hair and a wicked smile. Attractive, but even drunk Shouto's not going to sleep with a co-worker. He's got rules. Some of them might be broken, or bent dramatically, but not that one, even if the man's doing his best to convince Shouto otherwise.

He laughs again, shaking his head, pushing his hair back out of his face with one hand, then slips back through the crowd to the other end of the bar, looking for the bartender to order another round. Most of the others might have already left, save for two or three, but he's not tired, and the night's still young. Maybe he'll find someone else who's still up for something interesting, too, and fuck responsibility and good decisions and expectations for one night.]

[All things considered, Cordis isn't such a bad time, he thinks. It could be much worse. Sanguis seems so angry, so territorial, and Iris--well, it's awkward enough being a teenage boy figuring out what he's attracted to without the kind of things Iris brings. Cordis, on the other hand...Cordis just makes him feel good. Lighthearted, playful even. Sure, he's hungry all the time, but that's not too hard to fix, either.

The urge to moonlace, on the other hand...that one is a little harder, especially when you're normally a bit more reserved and your usual friends are busy. Maybe that's why he's ended up outside a different door--one that he's going to knock on, ears making the hood of his hoodie look strange and tail twitching behind him.]

His mother has good days and bad days.

On the good days, she's sweet and kind. She greets him with a hand on his cheek and a smile, she asks him how his classes are going, she remembers the friends he mentions and teases him about being popular with the girls. They go for long walks in the facility grounds and she tells him about the plants she's growing in the little space they've let her have, and he ends the visit with a hug, her thin, fragile form in his careful arms, and he wonders at how much smaller than him she is already. On the good days, he leaves with hope and renewed determination to become the best he can be, to show his father that number two isn't just second place and it's a place and a life to be proud of.

This was not a good day.

This was the kind of day where he opened her door and she looked at him for that first second with fear and hatred and sorrow, where her eyes lingered on his left side too long, no matter how much he tried to keep her on his right. This was the kind of day where every response was distracted and her voice too high-pitched and her laughter sharp and strained. This was the day that, when he reached out to stop her from walking in front of a speeding golf cart full of groundskeepers, she flinched from his touch and slapped him across the face.

She'd apologized, horror on her face and heartbreak in her voice, and he'd said it was fine, and he loved her, but he left soon after, hurrying back towards the school dorms where he could just...shut himself away. It was still early on Sunday. Everyone would still be out, or training, and he could have time to put himself back together. His right cheek is still burning from her slap, stinging and red and almost bruised, and it aches with a pain sharper and more real than the phantom ache of his scarred left side. It's a strange feeling. Normally that side doesn't feel hot. Everything is backwards. Everything is backwards, and his chest is tight, and he can feel the tears trying to burn at his eyes, but it's fine, he's almost there--

--and then he rounds the corner of the stairs heading up towards the fourth floor, and almost runs straight into Midoriya, coming down. Todoroki's eyes are wide, almost glassy, and his heart is racing, and it's only a second before he looks away, not quite flinching but all but vibrating with tension.

"...Sorry. I didn't see you there."

His voice is rough, strained, just as tight as his shoulders, and he waits for Midoriya to keep on going, to be tactful or distracted or whatever it is he needs to be, so he can finally make it up that last flight to his own floor and the safety of his room.

    CHARACTER
    NAME: Shoto Todoroki
    CANON: My Hero Academia
CANON POINT: End of s3 of the anime
    AGE: 16
    BACKGROUND: wiki wiki

PERSONALITY: In many ways, Shoto's Quirk is reflective of his personality. He is a person of contrasts and extremes, both hot and cold, passionate and analytical. This isn't to say he has a split personality or anything, but conflict between his halves and the search for balance and resolution is an essential part of his character arc and growth as a person.

On the surface, Shoto is calm, cool, a stoic type who is intensely analytical. He rarely smiles, keeps himself focused on performing well at school and training his skills, and doesn't really make small talk with his classmates. Referred to as 'cool,' 'manly,' and 'intense' by his classmates, he's the stereotypical ice prince. His confidence in his abilities and strength when paired with his general brusque demeanor frequently make him come off as arrogant and rude. His analytical skills are also quite strong, meaning that Shoto is incredibly perceptive and often able to see through to the heart of an issue, and will often voice any concerns or revelations bluntly, with little concern or awareness for how this might affect the feelings of others. All of these things combined with the incredible strength of his quirk, his general appearance (being one of the tallest students in his class without a physical/body modification Quirk, with the kind of body that comes from a lot of intense work and a prominent burn scar over the left side of his face) and the fact that he's been subjected to intense training for the last decade of his life mean that it's very easy to forget that Shoto is only 15 when he starts at UA, and is in fact one of the youngest students in his class. He's still a kid, just like his peers in many ways, though honestly he just isn't sure how to actually make friends or talk to people outside of only the roughest context. Shoto spent his entire life from age 5 to 15 completely isolated from both his peers and his siblings, sequestered away with his father and subjected to a harsh training regimen. Canon doesn't really say one way or the other, but judging by his inability to actually communicate with his peers, I assume he was homeschooled during this period. He's incredibly intelligent and approaches his academic training with the same seriousness he approaches his Quirk training, and placed 5th in his class midterms, only falling behind class representative Iida, top student Yaoyorozu, Midoriya and Bakugou, and yet despite this intelligence he also frequently will jump to the wrong conclusion based on available data (like noticing the connection between Midoriya's ability and All Might's, but then assuming Midoriya was All Might's secret love child). He's also got a tendency to take things incredibly literally, and is so earnest and direct it can occasionally cause secondhand embarrassment.

Below that cool, competent exterior however, Shoto is all fire: he's passionate about his ideals, driven in pursuit of his goals, though those change over the course of his first year at UA and will continue to evolve. He's got an incredibly high competitive drive, and is constantly striving to be the best, both to show his father not to take him lightly but also because he holds himself to an incredibly high standard, feeling responsible in large part for the suffering of his mother during his childhood. He still feels bitterness and resentment towards his father for the physical and emotional abuse he subjected both Shoto and his mother to, and at first vows to become a hero without ever using what he calls his father's fire quirk just to spite him, but over the course of his developing friendship with Midoriya Shoto is learning to come to terms with that half of his lineage, claiming his fire for himself and finding motivation in other places besides just the drive to surpass his father. He never blamed his mother for the burn she inflicted upon him as a child, but stayed away for years out of a sense of guilt, for being the 'reason' for her psychotic break and his father's abuse, but has also recently begun to reconcile those feelings as well. He frequently pushes himself to his limits, and takes blame for things that aren't necessarily his fault, berating himself for choices he could have made better and replaying events after the fact, a trait he shares with Midoriya.

In honesty, Shoto's behavior actually becomes a little less mature as the school year progresses. Thanks to his friendship with Midoriya, and the relationships he's slowly building with his classmates such as Iida and Yaoyorozu, Shoto is learning to 'thaw out' to some degree, revealing a very wry, sardonic sense of humor and a flair for the melodramatic. Once he's decided he's someone's friend, he's dedicated 100%, and won't hesitate to step up to their defense, whether that means fighting alongside them, taking an internship with his father to learn how to be a better number two, or literally calling the chief of police a mutt because he's talking shit about his friends. He's learning how to be more human, and while there are still plenty of stumbling blocks he'll face along the way, overall, Shoto Todoroki is an incredibly passionate, dedicated individual who at his core wants to become a hero not just to be better than his father, but to help people and show them what being a hero truly means. While he has trouble letting go of his past, continuing to struggle with his abusive father and traumatic childhood and the marks both physical and emotional that these have left on him, he strives to look towards the future and pursue his goals with all his heart, learning to rely not just upon himself but on the friends he's making and the supportive adult role models he now has in his life.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Shoto's Quirk is called Half-Cold Half-Hot, and it's stated to be one of the most powerful Quirks of his generation. The right half of his body produces ice and cold-based attacks, while the left half of his body produces fire and heat-based attacks. While he has to be careful to not make his body temperature fluctuate too much, risking heatstroke or hypothermia, Shoto is more than capable of creating vast icebergs that fill half of a stadium or large, fiery tornadoes. While both sides are equally powerful, Shoto has definitely practiced more with his ice-based powers and thus has more control and dexterity with them as opposed to his fire powers, and often tends to lead with his right half in a fight--a tendency which he admits makes him somewhat predictable in a fight and which he's trying to correct.

Along with this quirk, Shoto also possesses enhanced durability, able to take even a 5% One For All punch from Midoriya directly to the stomach without internal injuries, enhanced endurance born from his history of intense training, and incredibly good reflexes and agility. He's strong, fast, and smart as hell, able to make connections quickly and develop tactics to use against an opponent mid-battle. He's also fairly book smart, placing 5th in the school midterms.

INVENTORY: Shoto is arriving in his hero costume, which has five first aid kits in small capsules hanging from his belt. Aside from these things, he just has his phone in his pocket--which clearly is way out of service range. Good thing, those roaming charges would be insane.

[it's about 3am in los angeles, and todoroki is just getting back to the hotel. his father's still down at the bar with whatever executive he's meeting tonight, and frankly he can stay there. todoroki is tired and frustrated and lonely, and he doesn't want to have to put on his public face any more.

discarding his jacket and loosening his tie, he falls backward on the bed, pulling out his phone. some quick math tells him it's about 7pm back home. midoriya should be done with dinner.]

There's a rock climbing wall in the gym at this hotel. It made me think of you. We should try that, sometime, when I get home.
